He had no issues figuring out how to use the unit to read codes. I bought this with my father so we'd both have a unit to read codes and help us troubleshoot new vehicles. He's in his mid 50's, and isn't incredibly computer competent but is very well "geared" toward automotive repairs & troubleshooting. This model had the best feature set for the price and also seemed to have the best reviews. The ability to view/record live data as the car is driving was important for me because many issues are difficult to replicate when the car isn't in motion-- the same ones that the car dealers often have a difficult time identifying.
This machine was 2 days old bought new and I received an email to upgrade it for ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS.Also a cable promised in multiple emails missing from the package was supposed to be DROPPED IN THE MAIL 2 months ago.Still nothing received.I would be very careful buying this company's products even though the machineseems to work well on my JeeP Grand Cherokee.I STILL do not have the ability to download and save my vehicles correct settings to this day.I have sent the company my address responding to an email asking for it a total of 14 times now.These people who lose jobs in this economy really need to get to WORK.Did you ever hear an illegal alien complain about working.You wonder why these companies are in such trouble.I may keep this machine but I will NEVER BUY another from this company.RC

Would buy this one over others just for this feature. Tried it out on both my cars and works as advertised. I received this from Amazon using super saver shipping which took forever. Not being able to connect to PC via USB is a 2 star deduction because I contacted the mfr via email to ask about availability of a USB cable. Appears to be well made and comes with a nice padded storage case. Backlit screen is very nice, useful feature. They blew me off and did not even respond to my email. (Don't ya hate that.).
Simple. So far, I have 'saved' several trips to the mechanic's shop, and fortunately, been able to resolve the check engine code issues by myself.
The Scan Tool works very quickly to link to the vehicle and run the diagnostic programs. I purchased the 3130 recently and have already used it several times.
It is amazing at how many friends' have vehicles with 'Check Engine Light' problems after telling them I now have a scan tool. The written code explanation is nice, and it gives you precise trouble-shooting information when you actually do have a problem.
The universal plug is easy to connect to the car's computer and the backlit display is a function that has been wonderful - especially when checking codes is usually done after work in the evening. Clearing fault codes after repairs is accomplished with the push of a button.
Shop rates in my area are $90/Hour and the purchase of this tool has ultimately helped me keep more money in my pocket - and that is a good thing.
